Migration to ODI 14

The Challenge

Many organizations encounter significant challenges when migrating their Oracle Data Integrator (ODI) environments from earlier versions (ODI 10, ODI 11, ODI 12) to the latest release, ODI 14 (December 2024). Experience shows that standard upgrade procedures using the Oracle Upgrade Assistant (UA) alone may lead to complications. These issues often emerge during initial testing phases or, even more critically, in subsequent development activities.

In particular, ODI Mappings and Interfaces pose substantial difficulties due to structural changes introduced in recent ODI versions. These elements require careful handling to avoid long-term inefficiencies in your data integration workflows.

Our solution

Leveraging extensive experience—including hundreds of successful migrations from Oracle Warehouse Builder (OWB) and prior ODI versions—D&T has developed a specialized migration approach and custom tooling to complement and optimize Oracle’s standard Upgrade Assistant process.

How Our Migration Process Works

Our procedure follows Oracle’s recommended migration approach, enriched by additional custom tooling developed by D&T:

  • Asking the Customer to provide all involved data schemas objects (tables, views) without data, empty structures only.
  • Asking the Customer to provide an export of the projects that have to be migrated (Smart Export or Data Pump)
  • Creating the provided empty data schemas in our laboratory.
  • Importing the exported projects in our laboratory.
  • Run Oracle’s Upgrade Assistant (UA) to upgrade your existing repository.
  • Addressing and solving all issues that might have been generated by the upgrading assistant.
  • Testing all migrated objects by running them in our laboratory against the empty structures. Fix all issues in case.
  • Export previously deleted ODI Packages using Oracle’s Smart Export utility from the original schema.
  • Re-import these ODI Packages into the ODI 14 environment using Oracle’s Smart Import utility, configuring it to utilize the newly created ODI Mappings seamlessly.

Upon completing these steps, your ODI environment is fully migrated to ODI 14.

Key Benefits for Your Organization

  • Significant reduction in migration complexity and operational risks.
  • Faster development cycles and easier maintenance post-migration.
  • Enhanced clarity and sustainability of your ODI projects.
